Binghamton University utilizes sustainable maintenance on campus through the practice of a "Low-Mow" maintenance regime in a number of grassy areas on campus. In these areas mowing occurs once a year in the fall, once temperatures drop below freezing and all of the plants have died.
The low maintenance system decreases the University's use of fossil fuels and increases biodiversity and drought tolerance. It also aids in erosion reduction in the campus watershed by allowing the land to absorb more storm water by slowing down runoff.

A number of these Low-Mow sites are scattered around campus. One of the easiest ones to find is adjacent to Lot M parking lot. Here in the summer you can see tall grasses and wildflowers that attract local pollinators and provide habitat for a variety of organisms.
