E. Access Road Pool

42° 5.019'N, 75° 57.697'W

This is a forested vernal pool that is not too far from the E. Access Rd. on the south side of campus. In early spring this site is home to wood frogs, newts, and other amphibians. If you're out in early spring you might hear a wood frog chorus greet you at this site.

If you happen to visit in winter you won't see any amphibians or hear their choruses but somewhere nearby wood frogs are doing something incredible in their burrows. These amazing animals have an almost unbelievable ability- they survive through the long cold Southern Tier winters by essentially freezing themselves! Check out this really interesting video about winter wood frogsicles to learn more!

E. Access Rd. pool in late summer. After a record wet summer in the Southern Tier in 2021, the site still has some standing water present. In drier summers, it often has no standing water this time of the year.
